Chapter 2.2 Percents and Estimation

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

It's Mr. Garbe! Tonight you will be learning lesson 2.2, estimating the percent of a number.  There are two standards connected to this lesson. They are 7.RP.3 and 7.EE.3.

There are two things that you have probably already learned that are highlighted in this lesson. They are estimating and rounding. Do you remember what estimating and rounding mean? Estimating is making a rough or approximate calculation. Rounding is when you slightly change a number to make a calculation more simple. But why would we ever estimate and round in math if we want an exact answer?
In the real world, you will estimate all the time. For example, when you are shopping for new clothes and find that a $52.50 pair of jeans are 50% off, you might make an estimation by rounding $52.50 to $50. Then you can find 50% of $50. We all know that half of $50 is $25, so you would pay about $25 for that pair of pants. If the cashier rings the jeans up to be $35, you can tell them that they are wrong! Eventually, you will be able to do some of this in your head.

If you need more practice with rounding you can go to this website: http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-4/rounding

Homework: Read the blog above, watch the videos and take notes in your graphic organizer for lesson 2 - Percents and Estimations.

As always in Math,
Mrs M and Mr Garbe
